Silence. Silence spoke volumes. The more the snow fell the thicker the silence became. Director Vivian Snipes explored the misinterpretation of silences, and things that go unsaid, in this innovatively staged production. We pushed our acting boundaries as we added the additional techniques of mask and mime to our first Discovery Production of the season.
In a city immersed in winter and Norse mythology Gerda and Kai lived just across the attic rooftops from each other — their lives as intertwined as the rose trellis which bridged the gap between their windows — neither was willing to take the first step and admit their love for the other yet desperately hoped the other would take the first step. On the edge of a precipice, tumbling into the rest of their lives Kai and Gerda ventured out on Christmas Eve to help Gerda’s Grandmother. Traversing the snowy streets the trio were unknowingly caught in the midst of a battle between The Snow Queen and Jorelie, the leader of the dreaded wild hunt. As snowflakes and splinters of the glass mirror flew Kai chose the path of the Snow Queen. It was up to Gerda to follow her heart on a quest that she hoped would save the one she loves.
